Based on these two observations, the researchers identified four stress-related factors that interfere with sleep. These include physical stress and shift work, psychosocial stress, non-work related social and environmental disadvantages, and non-health life events and problems at work. The more work-related and non-work-related stressors people had, the more sleep problems they had. At the same time, different types of stress affected sleep in different ways. Work stress caused persistent problems, and non-work related stress meant more such problems in the future.
