Malysheva and Gandelman: Constantly high blood pressure may indicate adrenal cancer

Doctors and TV presenters Elena Malysheva and German Gandelman on the air of the program “Live Healthy!” on Channel One talked about the connection between high blood pressure and adrenal cancer.

Hypertension can be a sign of an adrenal tumor, doctors noted.

— The adrenal gland and kidney are organs that regulate blood pressure in our body, — Gandelman said.

Malysheva added that high blood pressure can indicate adrenal cancer, mainly in young people.

— The tumor produces a hormone that increases blood pressure, — she noted.

If patients experience sharp increases and decreases in blood pressure, this indicates the presence of pheochromocytoma, a hormonally active tumor of the adrenal or extra-adrenal localization.

The main symptoms of adrenal cancer:

  • Hormonal changes. Excessive production of cortisol can cause weight gain, swelling, hypertension, changes in appearance, thinning of the skin, and bruising.
  • Excess production of aldosterone leads to high blood pressure, loss of potassium, and muscle weakness.
  • Excess production of sex hormones causes changes in sexual function, acne, hirsutism (excessive hair growth in women), or changes in the menstrual cycle.

General symptoms:

  • Pain in the abdomen or back associated with tumor enlargement.
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • There may be either an increase or decrease in appetite.
  • Insomnia or other sleep problems.
  • Depression or mood swings.
