The first case of the birth of a healthy child to a mother with cystic fibrosis in the country was recorded in the Sverdlovsk region.

According to the press service of the regional Ministry of Health, the Sverdlovsk resident, who was the first in Russia with such a diagnosis to become pregnant, carry and give birth to a healthy baby, was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 6. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease in which the work of the glands of external secretion is disrupted. The respiratory and digestive systems suffer the most from the pathology. The greatest danger in cystic fibrosis is its consequences – for example, these can be respiratory failure and cirrhosis of the liver.

A resident of the Sverdlovsk region was under observation at the regional children's hospital (ODKB) until she came of age. Speaking about cystic fibrosis, the hospital's pulmonologist Olga Beglyanina noted that today it is considered incurable: there are no drugs that could correct the gene “breakdown” that causes it. At the same time, the doctor noted that targeted therapy allows eliminating the consequences of the pathology, which not so long ago was perceived as a death sentence due to its ability to shorten life.

The patient began taking it two years ago. Such therapy allows maintaining quality of life with this disease, but for women undergoing treatment, the possibility of becoming pregnant is reduced to a minimum. In a sense, the pregnancy of the new mother was a miracle.

Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote that a Russian woman from Lyubertsy gave birth to her first child at the age of 51.
