Scientists fear that they have identified a new threat to a future pandemic – a virus that lives in the body of African monkeys. Monkey hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV), which causes devastating symptoms similar to those of Ebola, including massive internal bleeding. At the moment, it kills almost all primates that become infected with it.

The virus takes over the immune system and disables key defense mechanisms, destroying the body cell by cell. So far, not a single case has been identified among humans, but the virus itself, according to the researchers, has already mutated enough to jump over to humans.

Now we need to develop tests for this virus and track its spread in order to nip a new outbreak in the bud and prevent it from growing to the scale of COVID-19. The study was conducted by scientists at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who are sounding the alarm about the compatibility of SHFV with the human body, which was confirmed by laboratory studies.
