Endocrinologist Pavlova: chocolate helps break down fats, it’s better to choose dark chocolate

Cocoa beans contain theobromine. It helps the body break down fats, preventing obesity-related disorders.

Endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova reported this on her blog.

—Dark chocolate is preferable. Firstly, it is less sweet and high in calories, and secondly, it contains five times more theobromine than milk, the doctor said.

Theobromine is an alkaloid found in cocoa beans and chocolate. It is a nervous system stimulant and a weak diuretic. Theobromine may also increase energy levels and improve mood.

Pavlova listed the beneficial properties of theobromine:

  • It contains many antioxidants
  • May counteract the effects of high cholesterol on memory and cognitive function.
  • Prevents neuronal damage.

  • Heals the liver and kidneys. Prevents the formation of kidney stones.

The doctor advises treating yourself to a piece of dark chocolate as a dessert.

Theobromine intake should be moderate as in large quantities it can cause unwanted side effects such as insomnia, nervousness and increased heart rate. People with caffeine sensitivity are advised to limit their intake of foods containing theobromine.
