Endocrinologist Afonina: Bread and mashed potatoes can cause a sharp jump in blood sugar

bread
As endocrinologist Armine Afonina explained, it is not only sweets that can sharply increase blood sugar levels. You need to pay attention to the glycemic index of the product.

— This is an indicator reflecting the rate at which sugar is absorbed by the body. And the higher it is, the faster glucose enters the blood, and the more noticeable the fluctuations in its level will be, — the doctor noted.

Unsweetened foods that can cause a sharp increase in sugar levels:

  • wheat bread and any baked goods made from wheat flour;
  • mashed potatoes;
  • white rice;
  • small pasta;
  • canned beans and corn;
  • instant cereals;
  • semolina;
  • couscous;
  • corn flakes, popcorn;
  • chips;
  • boiled beets, carrots and pumpkin;
  • dried fruits.

The doctor advised to stick to a balanced diet, monitor your weight and not forget about moderate physical activity.

Blood sugar fluctuations can cause serious harm to the cardiovascular system, kidneys and vision. Obesity leads to conditions that precede diabetes or diabetes itself, the doctor reminded.

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can be suspected by several symptoms:

  • Frequent urination. Increased urine volume and frequency of trips to the toilet.
  • A constant feeling of thirst that does not go away even after drinking.
  • A feeling of fatigue and weakness, even with sufficient rest.
  • A feeling of dryness and discomfort in the mouth.
  • Temporary changes in vision, blurring.
  • Slow healing of wounds, frequent infections or itchy skin.
  • Increased hunger, even after eating.
