Edema? Check your thyroid

legs
According to doctors, the appearance of edema may indicate the presence of heart failure, kidney problems and hypothyroidism.

Edema is a symptom of various pathological conditions, they are characterized by excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissues. To recognize swelling, you need to press on the anterior surface of the lower leg. In case of edema, a hole remains, which does not disappear immediately.

First of all, when edema appears, you need to check the condition of the kidneys, since such a reaction of the body can be caused by a decrease in the excretory function of the organ. Edema can also indicate heart problems and the development of heart failure.

The third group is associated with hormonal imbalance. Edema is one of the main signs of hypothyroidism – a disease of the thyroid gland caused by an insufficient amount of hormones produced by it.

The occurrence of edema does not always indicate the presence of health problems. Sometimes it's just the consequences of malnutrition.

Let us dwell in more detail on the edema that occurs with hypothyroidism. With hypothyroidism, edema can be observed not only in the usual areas (legs, eyelids, hands), but also in non-standard areas. The larynx and tongue may swell, which changes the voice. The ear may swell, and then the development of otitis media is possible.

In cardiovascular diseases, edema usually occurs on the legs, and patients with kidney pathology are concerned about swelling of the face. With hypothyroidism, the whole body swells – legs, arms, stomach, face and area around the eyes.

How does hypothyroidism affect the appearance?

The advanced hypothyroidism negatively affects the appearance: the face becomes swollen, the eyelids swell, the corners of the mouth go down. The skin becomes dry and loose. The eye slit becomes narrow. Lips and nose sometimes bluish.

Hypothyroidism is a disease that is much more common in women than in men. Many symptoms of the disease, especially changes in appearance, are usually associated with any other causes, such as ecology and stress. Doctors remind that a simple laboratory analysis helps to establish a diagnosis.
