Doctor Lebedeva: Take two tests and find out whether you are absorbing vitamin D or not

woman
Gastroenterologist Dilyara Lebedeva told what tests need to be taken to understand whether vitamin D is being absorbed or not. Its deficiency creates many problems in the body.

— Vitamin D increases immunity, affects intestinal, kidney and muscle cells, and is involved in regulating blood pressure and heart function, — the doctor wrote in her blog.

It is also necessary for the functioning of the thyroid gland and is a good preventative for cancer. However, if the vitamin is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, then it is practically useless to take supplements with it.

The doctor advises to take two tests:

A coprogram will show the failure to absorb fats, and therefore vitamin D;
An ultrasound of the abdominal cavity will reveal dyskinesia of the gallbladder and stagnation of bile, which is involved in the absorption of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a key role in maintaining healthy bones and the immune system. It helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which is important for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.

How to understand that the body lacks vitamin D?

  • Constant fatigue and general weakness
  • Bone and muscle pain, especially in the back and pelvis.
  • Frequent infections.
  • Mood problems.
  • Slow growth in children.
  • Dental problems.

Major sources of vitamin D:

  • Sunlight. The body can synthesize vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.
  • Food. Vitamin D is found in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), liver, egg yolks, and fortified foods (milk, cereals).
  • Supplements. Vitamin D can be taken in supplement form, especially in winter or when there is a lack of sunlight (after consulting a doctor).
