The habit of going to bed late can be the cause of intestinal problems. Somnologist, osteopath, neurologist Ruslan Kutuzov spoke about the unobvious consequences of lack of sleep.

Lack of sleep can cause digestive problems, including constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain, the doctor noted. Another consequence is decreased immunity.

As for the obvious consequences of the habit of going to bed late and not getting enough sleep, these are chronic fatigue, drowsiness and decreased performance.

Lack of sleep reduces cognitive abilities: memory weakens, the ability to concentrate decreases, impulsivity and irritability appear, and depression can develop.

Lack of sleep can increase the risk of developing heart and vascular problems, including hypertension and stroke.

What other consequences can there be if a person chronically does not get enough sleep?

  • Decreased productivity. A decrease in work capacity and productivity, which can negatively affect studies and work.
  • Increased risk of accidents and injuries due to drowsiness and impaired reaction time.
  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
  • Long-term effects. Chronic lack of sleep can lead to serious diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Recent research shows that lack of sleep can lead to obesity.

Lack of sleep affects the levels of hormones that regulate appetite. The level of ghrelin (the hunger hormone) increases and the level of leptin (the satiety hormone) decreases, which leads to increased hunger and the desire to eat more.

People who lack sleep are more likely to choose high-calorie and unhealthy foods. In addition, chronic lack of sleep can disrupt metabolism, slowing down the process of burning calories and promoting fat accumulation.
