Doctor Gubanova: Abuse of honey can lead to obesity

Gastroenterologist and therapist Irina Gubanova told whether replacing sugar with honey can help reduce body weight. This is a very healthy product, but you can't abuse it.

Honey is high in calories. 21 grams (tablespoon) contains about 64 calories and about 17 grams of sugar.

“Frequent consumption of honey, which is a source of simple carbohydrates, can lead to weight gain and subsequent obesity, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” the doctor noted.

She drew attention to the high glycemic index of honey, which causes a sharp increase in blood glucose levels. This leads to a rapid feeling of hunger.

At the same time, the benefits of honey for the body are undeniable. It is rich in vitamins B and C, it contains a lot of iron, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium and zinc.

— Thanks to its unique composition, honey has a positive effect on health. It helps improve microcirculation, reduce blood pressure and supports the nervous system, having a calming effect, — the doctor emphasized.

Honey has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which makes it an indispensable remedy for colds. It also promotes healing of the gastrointestinal mucosa in case of inflammation and damage, acts as a prebiotic.

Honey should be excluded from the menu for people with diabetes. Remember, it can cause severe allergies.
Honey should not be added to hot tea. At high temperatures, it is destroyed, and the body receives only “naked” sugar as a result, which leads to an increase in glucose levels.
