Doctor Bereznikov: People who are afraid of diabetes choose sour fruits, but this is a mistake

According to nutritionist and doctor of medical sciences Alexey Bereznikov, people who are afraid of high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes choose sour fruits, thinking that they contain less sugar. This is a misconception.

— In fact, you need to focus not on the taste of the fruit or berry, but on the glycemic index, — the doctor emphasized.

The higher the glycemic index (GI), the less useful the fruit is for people prone to obesity and diabetes.

Fruits and berries with a GI above 35 should not be overused. We are talking about kiwi, gooseberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, persimmons, bananas, melons, pineapples, watermelons, as well as all citrus fruits.

Anything with a GI below 35 can be eaten every day. These include avocados (10), cherries (25), strawberries (25), raspberries (25), pears (30), and apricots (34).

Fruits and foods with a high GI can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The glycemic index is an indicator that reflects how quickly carbohydrates in a product increase blood sugar levels after consumption. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 100.

Low GI (0-55). Foods with a low glycemic index are slowly digested and absorbed, which leads to a gradual increase in blood sugar levels. Examples: legumes, whole grains, most vegetables.

Medium GI (56-69). Examples: brown rice, oatmeal, some fruits.

High GI (70 and above). Foods with a high glycemic index are quickly digested and can cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Examples: white bread, sweets, potatoes.
