Doctor Baranova: Why diarrhea or constipation often occurs during travel and can it be avoided

Therapist and dermatologist Irina Baranova spoke about a problem that is familiar to many travelers. Why do gastrointestinal problems start during trips?

There is even a term for it – “traveler's diarrhea”. Constipation, bloating and other troubles also often occur. It is not about the quality of food, not about the cleanliness of hands, not about poisoning.

— Within a few days, and sometimes hours after arriving in another country, unformed frequent stools, cramps and abdominal pain, nausea, bloating appear, and headaches and signs of intoxication may also join in, — the doctor noted in her blog.

It's all about the “war of the worlds,” Baranova said, referring to the microbiota. It is attacked by foreign microbiota, characteristic of a particular region.

The human microbiota (or microflora) is all the microorganisms that inhabit our body and with which we coexist. These are mainly bacteria, as well as viruses, fungi, yeast and protozoa.

Each region has its own traditionally established microflora. By sowing from the intestines, it is possible to determine quite accurately where a person lives. Most often, this flora turns out to be unfriendly to guests.

Once in the intestines, foreign flora comes into contact with our microbiota. It does not matter how thoroughly we wash our hands, fruits and vegetables, since flora is everywhere: in water, on dishes, in food, on the hands of waiters, cooks and sellers.

An imbalance of intestinal microflora is reflected in:

  • well-being,
  • psycho-emotional background,
  • health of the skin and other body systems.

Of course, one should not confuse traveler's diarrhea with rotaviruses or E. coli, warned Baranova.

Scientists advise adhering to a lifestyle that promotes the well-being of the intestinal microbial composition:

  • increase the amount of foods rich in fiber (vegetables, fruits, legumes and cereals, nuts);
  • walk in the fresh air and be physically active;
  • do not take antibiotics without a doctor's prescription.
