Some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be contracted at home. A doctor from the skin and venereal disease clinic, Irina Avdeeva, spoke about this.

STIs are diseases that are transmitted from one person to another mainly during sexual contact. More than 30 such diseases are known.

In the vast majority of cases, infection occurs through sexual contact – through semen, discharge from the genitals, infection through blood is also possible.

According to the doctor, it is necessary to observe personal hygiene standards, since if they are grossly violated, some STIs can be infected at home.

— The causative agents of sexually transmitted diseases penetrate through microscopic damage to the skin and mucous membranes of the genital organs, mouth, and rectum, the doctor noted.

Signs of sexually transmitted infections

  • itching and burning in the genital area;
  • very frequent, painful urination;
  • unusual discharge and odor from the genitals;
  • redness in the genital area and anus;
  • appearance of a rash on the body;
  • ulcers, blisters, pimples on the genitals, around the anus, in the mouth, on the lips;
  • enlarged lymph nodes, especially in the groin area; lower abdominal pain;
  • pain in the vagina during sexual intercourse;
  • bloody vaginal discharge between periods.

The doctor reminded that many sexually transmitted diseases have an incubation period of 3-4 weeks, so tests immediately after sexual intercourse will not be reliable.

According to doctors, the highest incidence among STIs is caused by eight pathogens. Of these, four infections – syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis – are curable. The remaining four infections – hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV) – are viral in nature and cannot be cured.
