Diet: Eating tomatoes daily may protect against skin cancer

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of oncology. Experts reveal link between tumor drug and Mediterranean diet.

Regular consumption of tomatoes may reduce the development of tumors, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Scientists tested this hypothesis in laboratory rodents and found that male mice fed tomato powder daily for 35 weeks experienced a 50 percent reduction in skin cancer after exposure to UV radiation compared to those who did not eat tomato powder.
It is known that skin cancer can be caused by sun exposure.

—We hypothesized that eating tomatoes would reduce the number of tumors in animals, and that this biological effect would be the result of altered skin metabolomes and plasma, – the study says.
Fresh tomato juice is a good remedy for sunburn, which may be due to the carotenoids they contain.

Jessica Cooperstone, co-author of the study, noted that dietary carotenoids, which give tomatoes their color , and also found in brightly colored vegetables such as peppers, can protect against ultraviolet radiation.

– Lycopene, the main carotenoid in tomatoes, is the most effective antioxidant of these pigments. However, when comparing lycopene administered from a whole food (tomato) versus a synthesized supplement, tomatoes were more effective, she said.
Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment that determines the color of the fruits of some plants, such as tomatoes, guava, watermelon.

Experts emphasize that if you reconsider your diet and opt for a Mediterranean diet that includes many vegetables, this will help stop the development of diseases, including cancer.
