Dementia: eczema could be a potential risk factor

hands
Despite the achievements of modern medicine, it has not yet been possible to find a way to cure dementia. Therefore, it is so important to know the risk factors for this disease and fight them.

When dementia develops, memory, behavior and the ability to perform normal activities deteriorate. It usually affects the elderly, but is not a normal condition of aging. In the later stages completely destroys the personality of a person.

There are a number of risk factors associated with this disease, and one of the latest identified is skin conditions such as eczema. Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by itching, redness, and small blisters of fluid.

A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology examined data from over a million participants in the Health Improvement Network database.< br>
Data have shown a higher incidence of dementia among people with atopic eczema compared to people without the condition. Moreover, the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia has been found to be higher in patients with severe eczema.

The study found that the risk of developing dementia worsened after eczema appeared, after an average of five years.

Scientists hypothesized that inflammatory processes may affect the central nervous system, which may be associated with dementia. During an allergy flare, eczema triggers the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are believed to play a critical role in the development of dementia.

According to scientists, the skin condition may be related to a neuro-immune response that can disrupt certain brain functions and circuits involved in memory and cognition.
