A 12-year-old American schoolboy lost his sight because he ate only fast food. The child has autism.
According to the Daily Mail, a boy from Massachusetts went blind because of his diet. His food lacked vital nutrients.
The parents said that their son has autism and, as a result, a selective feeding syndrome. He cannot stand certain food textures and eats only burgers, French fries and donuts. He only drinks juice.
Vision problems have been going on for a long time and have been progressing. One night, the boy woke up and said that he could not see anything. Doctors discovered a vitamin deficiency in his body, including vitamins A, C and D, as well as copper and zinc.
Doctors fear that the vision loss may be irreversible.
Earlier, “MedicForum” wrote about a woman with a similar syndrome – she ate only potatoes for 20 years. She also has serious health problems.
Selective eating syndrome can be associated with physiological reasons. This type usually occurs due to the sensory characteristics of food: people are unpleasant to some texture, smell, color. This reason is typical for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Restrictions can be associated with digestive characteristics, manifested as heartburn, nausea, bloating, poor appetite.
Selectivity can be formed as a conditioned reflex. A child could choke on a certain type of food, after which a connection was formed between food and fear.
Selective eating syndrome in ASD is caused by disturbances in perception due to brain damage affecting the sensory channels. The perception of taste, smell, and type of food in people with ASD occurs differently than in healthy people, up to horror at the sight of certain textures.
