Cardiologist: what diseases can worsen after Epiphany bathing

According to Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yevgeny Shlyakhto, bathing in icy water on Epiphany can lead to an exacerbation of chronic diseases. This is especially dangerous for people with cardiovascular disorders.

Doctors are well aware that after Baptism there is a short-term increase in applications due to exacerbation of chronic diseases.

— The reason is the unpredictable reaction of the body to hypothermia, especially after a violation of the diet and motor regimen during the New Year holidays,– Shlyakhto said, his words are quoted by the city health committee on VKontakte.
Both acute conditions can develop and chronic diseases can worsen, the expert emphasized. The main cause is vascular spasm, which appears in response to a sharp temperature drop and leads to a shortage of blood circulation in the vital organs.

As a result, may develop:

  • acute myocardial infarction,
  • stroke,
  • severe cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Older people are especially at risk, as well as patients registered with a cardiologist and a neurologist.

    With epilepsy, bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, kidney failure and some skin diseases swimming in the hole is “categorically not recommended,” the scientist said.

    The Ministry of Health noted that swimming is contraindicated for people with the following diseases: bathing

    • cardiovascular,
    • bronchopulmonary,
    • gynecological,
    • diabetes,
    • < li>hypertension,

    • epilepsy and a tendency to convulsions,
    • inflammatory processes in the kidneys,
    • thyroid diseases,
    • infectious diseases .

    Experts warn: never dive headfirst into an ice hole. Jumping and head-first diving are not recommended, as this increases temperature loss and can lead to cold shock.
