“Attack on the brain”: four signs of a stroke that should not be ignored

head

Julie Bouverie, director of the Stroke Association, spoke about four signs of a stroke to look out for.

A stroke is a condition where the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. This is due to rupture or blockage of blood vessels. Due to the lack of oxygen and glucose, this condition leads to the death of brain cells.

If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or someone else, see your doctor right away:

  • Numbness of the face and facial expressions

  • Weakness in hands

  • Speech difficulties

This quick test is based on scientific research. It helps identify the three most common symptoms of a stroke, but there are other signs to look out for. These include:

  • severe memory loss,

  • confusion,

  • numbness on one side of the body

  • Sudden vision problems.

The most common consequences after a stroke are complete or partial paralysis, loss or impairment of hearing, memory, vision and speech. A stroke is dangerous because only about 20 percent of people fully recover, and the risk of a second stroke increases by almost 10 percent.

You can return to the previous state if you follow the recommendations of doctors. The first six months of rehabilitation are the most important, during this period the main recovery occurs. And the full return of all lost functions can take from 1 to 4 years.

Doctors have identified the main causes that can cause a stroke:

    Smoking

  • Alcohol abuse

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Hypertension

  • Diabetes

Obesity, chronic stress and a sedentary lifestyle can also trigger this condition. At risk are people whose relatives have had a stroke, men over 45 and women over 55.

Stroke is getting younger every year. Nowadays, stroke is not only suffered by people of age, but also by those under 25. In 50 percent of cases, this is due to external factors. Against the background of smoking, stress and a sedentary lifestyle, a sharp jump in pressure can occur. The young brain reacts more strongly than the brain of a middle-aged person, because he is not used to such a state.

In order to avoid a stroke, doctors advise:

  • Monitor weight

  • Reduce alcohol

  • Quit smoking

  • Control blood sugar and cholesterol levels

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables

  • Increase physical activity

  • Relieve Stress
