Vitamin B12 is an important fuel for the body, providing a number of important processes. A clear sign that you are deficient in the vitamin may be in your voice.

Vitamin B12 helps maintain healthy nerve and blood cells and helps build DNA. Not surprisingly, low levels of vitamin B12 can lead to malfunctioning of the entire body.

The review, published in a specialized journal, analyzed 89 studies of vitamin B12 deficiency to examine the spectrum of symptoms. Thirteen cases reported oral manifestations of B12 deficiency in patients aged 19-88 years.

One of the most common symptoms was glossitis, a condition in which the tongue becomes inflamed and swollen. Another manifestation is hoarseness, a general term that describes abnormal voice changes.

The review also noted a number of “mental” abnormalities associated with B12 deficiency. These are irritability, decreased interest in life and depression.

How to understand that the body lacks vitamin B12? Symptoms:

  • numbness of arms or legs,
  • problems with walking and balance,
  • anemia,
  • fatigue,
  • swollen, inflamed tongue,
  • li>
  • memory loss,
  • paranoia,
  • hallucinations.

There are two main causes of vitamin B12 deficiency: diet and pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disease that prevents the body from producing a protein made in the stomach that is needed for the absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestines.

Those who follow a strict vegan or vegetarian diet are also at high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

How is vitamin B12 deficiency treated?

Treating anemia with vitamin B12 deficiency or folic acid depends on the cause of the disease. Anemia with vitamin B12 deficiency is usually treated with vitamin B12 injections.

If B12 deficiency is caused by a lack of it in the diet, you may be prescribed pills, that is, the same vitamins.

Vitamin B12 is found mainly in products of animal origin:

  • meat – beef, chicken fillet;
  • organ meats – liver and kidneys;
  • seafood – shellfish;
  • fish – trout, salmon, tuna;
  • dairy products – milk, yogurt, cheese;
  • eggs.
