Nutritionist Elena Solomatina: fermented foods improve the condition of the microbiome, on which the functioning of the immune system depends.

Doctor Solomatina explained the need to eat fermented foods, which include pickled vegetables, kimchi, homemade pickles, fermented milk products, and kombucha. According to the doctor, the presence of such products in the daily diet has the most beneficial effect on the microbiome – the bacterial composition of the intestine, which contains up to 80 percent of the human immune system. By improving the functioning of the intestinal microbiome, such products make a person's protection from various diseases, both physical and mental, more reliable.

Solomatina noted that the habit of eating fermented foods helps to prolong life.

“The state of the microbiome also affects the level of inflammation, which in turn is associated with the development of atherosclerosis – damage to the endothelium and blood vessels. Atherosclerosis leads to cardiovascular diseases, which take the lives of the overwhelming majority of people,” the doctor said in a conversation with Vechernyaya Moskva.
The expert added that such products have very few contraindications. Only people with gastrointestinal diseases should consume them with caution.
