OSN: Signs of caffeine overdose may be confused with heart attack

A high dose of caffeine that enters the body can cause chest pain.

The sensitivity of the human body to caffeine and reactions to it are determined by individual characteristics – some people may feel unwell even if they drink a little coffee. The unfavorable symptoms that occur with an overdose of caffeine can be confused with a heart attack, the Public News Service reported.

“The caffeine found in coffee drinks is a fairly strong stimulant. It promotes the production of adrenaline, which speeds up the heart rate and increases the pulse rate,” OSN informed.
In addition to a rapid (or irregular) heartbeat, the following symptoms indicate a caffeine overdose:

  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Chest pain;
  • Nausea;
  • Convulsions;
  • Increased anxiety;
  • Dizziness;
  • Weakness.

The service's experts state that you can encounter such symptoms if you drink more than four cups of coffee (more than 400 mg of coffee per day). Doctors emphasize that people prone to urinary incontinence, psychoemotional disorders, and blood pressure surges should be especially careful when drinking coffee.

What to do if you overdose on caffeine. You should drink as much clean water as possible and do some light exercise – this speeds up your metabolism, helping to remove excess caffeine from your body. If you feel dizzy and weak, you should lie down. You can also eat foods rich in potassium and magnesium (for example, bananas), which speed up the elimination of caffeine from the body.
