Marshmallow is often called the healthiest sweet, but dietitian Solomatina explained in an interview why such a statement is not entirely correct. The specialist noted that it contains quite useful thickeners, such as agar-agar, gelatin and pectin. In the human body, they act as fiber or sorbents, cleansing it of potential toxins. But marshmallows still remain a sweet, that is, a rather risky treat.

“It is doubtful to call marshmallow a harmless product, because it contains sugar and molasses. People prone to high glucose levels, diabetics and those who are overweight are not recommended to eat marshmallows, as well as other sweets,” the expert stated in a commentary to Radio 1.
Those who do not have the above-mentioned problems can choose marshmallows if they really want something sweet. Compared to candies, cakes, pastries, such a dessert is less dangerous for the figure due to its lower calorie content. But even marshmallows should be eaten in very limited quantities, the nutritionist emphasized.

Solomatina clarified that eating desserts is not taboo for healthy people, but those with a sweet tooth need to monitor the overall calorie content of their diet throughout the day. The nutritionist advised making marshmallows, pastilles or marmalade at home without adding sugar or unnecessary additives – such a delicacy will be preferable to any store-bought desserts.
