Dietitian Yulia Chekhonina: you cannot completely give up bread; in some cases, even the often criticized white bread is useful.

Nutritionist Chekhonina said in an interview that recently bread has become a product that is “demonized” due to the risk of excess weight or some diseases (usually endocrine). The doctor emphasized that bread is not a bad or harmful product. It is not its consumption that is harmful to health, but an unbalanced diet, overeating and unwillingness to monitor the calorie content of the diet – this is becoming the key cause of extra pounds.

“Obesity develops due to the increased calorie content of the diet, and it is most often caused not by the bread itself, but by what we put on it: butter, cheese, ham and so on,” the nutritionist told Gazeta.Ru.
Chekhonina noted that even bread made from premium white flour, which is often recommended to be excluded from the diet, can be beneficial for the body. The expert stated that there is no direct connection between the consumption of bread, even white, and the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. She specified who benefits from eating white bread.

“In case of inflammatory diseases of the digestive organs, for example, in case of exacerbation of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, all types of bread are excluded from the diet, except white bread made from premium flour, which can be consumed in dried form. Other types can aggravate the course of the disease.”
The nutritionist drew attention to the fact that types of bread that can be considered healthy can be more caloric. For example, if the bread contains nuts, seeds, dried fruits, then its caloric content increases. Such bread should be treated as a dessert, the nutritionist believes.

“You can choose regular white, black or grey bread as your main dietary component. Despite the differences in color and composition, their calorie content is usually between 230 and 300 kilocalories,” the doctor said.
Chekhonina added that you can eat up to three pieces of bread a day – one for each meal. If a person really loves bread and eats more, they should exclude sweets, baked goods, and reduce high-fat foods in order to avoid excess weight. The nutritionist believes that completely giving up bread is a mistake.
