The so-called ketogenic diet may be more than just a fashion trend. A study found that a high-carbohydrate diet significantly reduced blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes. The ketogenic diet involves drastically reducing the amount of carbohydrates and replacing them with foods high in fat and protein.

Proponents of this diet claim that it can bring many health benefits, from keeping the mind sharp to improving the cardiovascular system. While many of these claims have not been confirmed, recent research shows that the keto diet can prevent type 2 diabetes in those at highest risk of developing it.

Scientists: ketogenic diet will help save the kidneys

The researchers followed 150 volunteers aged 40 to 70 whose blood sugar levels ranged from pre-diabetic to diabetic. No one took medication for this condition. One group received a normal diet, while the second received only 16 grams of carbohydrates per month or one slice of bread. By the end of the study, participants in the low-carbohydrate group had a three times greater decrease in hemoglobin. (READ MORE)
