According to the latest data, regular consumption of even one purple fruit – prunes – helps to promote healthy bones and the heart system, bringing special benefits to women.

Prunes are known to many as a remedy for constipation due to their high fiber content. But the benefits of the purple fruit extend to other health concerns as well. It has been found to help people live longer and is especially beneficial for women's health.

The results of a new study showed that eating 50 grams of prunes daily can protect bones by maintaining bone mineral density. Scientists state that strong and healthy bones are an indicator of longevity, since in this case the likelihood of complications, such as osteoporosis, which is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality, is reduced. The health benefits of fruit were found by the Pennsylvania State University Women's Health and Exercise Laboratory, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The researchers were interested in whether daily consumption of prunes could prevent loss of bone mineral density in the femur and protect postmenopausal women from hip fractures. The object of their observation were 235 women. The participants were divided into three groups; one was a control, the second women ate 50 grams of prunes daily, the third – 100 grams. As a result, it was found that the indicators of mineral density of the femur are the best in women who ate a portion of 50 grams. According to experts, prunes can indeed be used as an additional remedy for bone loss after menopause.

It is noted that in terms of antioxidant content, prunes compete with blueberries, known for their unprecedented antioxidant activity. It contains twice as many polyphenolic antioxidant compounds as most other fruits. These antioxidants have the ability to reduce inflammation in the body, helping to maintain bone density. It also contains several nutritional compounds known for their bone protective effects, including vitamin K, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium.

In addition, the polyphenols of this purple fruit may have a positive effect on the heart by mitigating risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. These substances have a strong anti-inflammatory effect that prevents cell damage. It is with a decrease in chronic inflammation in the body that a lower risk of cardiovascular disease is associated.
