People with high blood pressure should monitor their coffee intake.

Individuals with severe high blood pressure should exercise restraint on coffee, but also should not do without it at all, a new study from Japan concludes. The researchers who conducted the study concluded that small amounts of caffeine are good for the heart, while caffeinated drinks can double the risk of heart death if consumed improperly. 12,000 women aged 40 to 79 at the start of the study. All of them underwent medical examinations and completed questionnaires about lifestyle, nutrition and medical history. These people were monitored for almost 19 years, during which 842 deaths from cardiovascular diseases were recorded.

The authors of the project found a link between the amount of coffee consumed and the improvement or worsening of the condition in hypertensive patients. In particular, they found that two cups of coffee per day doubled the risk of death for patients with arterial hypertension with rates of 160 per 100 mm Hg. and higher. In turn, when drinking one cup of coffee per day, no side effects on the cardiovascular system appear, and moreover, in such an amount, the drink is useful for hypertension. The antioxidants that coffee is rich in effectively fight inflammation of the vascular and heart tissue.

Frequent coffee consumption: not harmful, but the health benefits are questionable
According to project lead researcher Hiroyasu Iso, people with high blood pressure should avoid excessive caffeine intake – consume no more than one cup per day or immediately switch to green tea. Drinking it also has a stimulating effect due to polyphenols, and, in addition, it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
