For breakfast to be beneficial, you need to monitor its composition; some foods should not be eaten on an empty stomach, said gastroenterologist Valeria Lomova.
Doctor Lomova said that certain food groups are not recommended for consumption on an empty stomach, so you should not eat them on an empty stomach during breakfast. One of these groups is those containing caffeine and coffee. The specialist noted that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause irritation of the gastric mucosa and heartburn due to increased production of hydrochloric acid.
Also, foods that should not be eaten on an empty stomach during breakfast include sources of simple or fast carbohydrates – bread and pastries made from white flour, sweets, instant porridge, dry breakfasts, semolina, boiled white rice. Simple carbohydrates should not be eaten on an empty stomach during breakfast, their consumption on an empty stomach will lead to a rapid increase in blood sugar and insulin levels, which is associated with weight gain.
Lomova clarified that carbohydrates present in the diet should be complex: such carbohydrates, for example, are found in whole grain cereals.
In addition, the nutritionist advised against eating fruit on an empty stomach, especially citrus fruits. The acids and coarse fiber they contain will irritate the gastric mucosa when they enter an empty stomach and provoke inflammation as a reaction to irritation. This can result in gastritis or ulcerative lesions.
The doctor also recommended against eating fermented milk products on an empty stomach. The gastroenterologist considers omelettes, boiled eggs, cereals, avocados, nuts, and casseroles to be the most suitable foods for breakfast, Gazeta.Ru cites the doctor's opinion.
