Endocrinologist Elena Boldyreva explained which fruits are permissible for diabetics.

Chelyabinsk endocrinologist Boldyreva stated that people with diabetes can afford to eat fruits, but it is necessary to take into account the glycemic index of fruits, she informed the press service of the regional Ministry of Health.

“All patients with diabetes need to know about such a concept as the glycemic index. This is a value that characterizes the sugar-increasing property of products that contain carbohydrates,” the specialist clarified.
Elena Boldyreva noted that with type 1 diabetes, any fruits can be present in the diet – but it is important to be able to compensate for their carbohydrate load, using insulin wisely. With type 2 diabetes, fruits with a high glycemic index should be consumed in strict restrictions. Preference should be given to gifts of nature that have a low glycemic load index – unsweetened varieties of apples and pears, peaches, plums and apricots, as well as oranges and grapefruits.

As for dried fruits, prunes, dried apples, dried apricots and dogwood have the lowest glycemic index.

The expert emphasized that fruits and dried fruits should be consumed in moderation if you have diabetes.
