“Contain too much sugar”: nutritionist Shafer talks about the possible harm of fruits

Recommendations for healthy eating usually do not go without mentioning fruit, but nutritionist Shafer warned Russians: their moderate consumption is safe for health, first of all. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, the doctor noted that the fruits sold today are excessively sweet: thanks to the efforts of breeders, they contain too much sugar, because this makes them more likely to be bought.

“Modern fruits and berries grown industrially contain five times more sugar compared to fruits grown 30 years ago,” said Anna Shafer.
Taking this into account, the nutritionist spoke about the possible harm of fruits. According to the expert, people who eat without restrictions risk overloading their body with excess fructose, which is used by it to synthesize triglycerides, which contributes to excess fat deposition and the development of associated pathologies – metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In addition, a large amount of fructose stimulates the production of uric acid, which increases the likelihood of joint inflammation, the development or exacerbation of arthritis, gout.

The doctor clarified how much fruit is appropriate in the daily diet.

“According to WHO recommendations, the daily diet should contain at least 400 grams of non-starchy vegetables and fruits. Fruit should account for two servings, each approximately 100 grams. That is, approximately one apple or orange, or a 200-gram branch of grapes, or one medium-sized banana.”
