The more foods with added sugar in the diet, the higher the risk of cardiovascular events, according to the journal BMC Medicine.

Authors of a new study, which the magazine writes about warns that modern people eat too much added sugar, and this has a big impact on their susceptibility to heart disease and strokes. According to experts, the high consumption of added sugar is directly related to the fact that a significant part of the diet of people today consists of ready-to-eat industrial products, as well as all kinds of ready-made drinks – from soda to packaged juices. Sugar today contains almost everything – bakery products, canned food, sauces, semi-finished products, sausages.

Researchers studied the data of more than 110,000 people from the British Biobank – their eating habits were monitored by doctors for nine years. Researchers have found that carbohydrate intake in general is not associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease. However, this risk was correlated with those who regularly ate a lot of added sugar.

“The more sugar-added foods the participants consumed, the higher their risk of heart disease and stroke,” the researchers said.
The study found that if people replaced just 5 percent of their daily calories from foods with added sugar with vegetables and fruits, their risk of stroke would drop by 9 percent immediately.

A diet high in plant foods reduces the risk of stroke by 10%

Experts emphasize: sugars contained in natural foods – milk, vegetables and fruits – are not added. To reduce added sugar intake, they recommend the following:

  • Replace sugary drinks with water or sugar-free drinks.
  • Avoid breakfast cereals and instant cereals.
  • Use mashed fruit, such as bananas, instead of jam, jam or honey.
  • Avoid ready-made sauces.
  • Check food labels: if sugar is listed as one of the first ingredients , there is a lot of it.
  • Instead of using ready-made meals and products, cook it yourself.
