The presence of sleep apnea – holding your breath during sleep, coupled with loud snoring – may indicate a person's susceptibility to a stroke, neurologist Nikolai Ilyin informed.

In an interview the doctor was warned that with the existing apnea, one should be wary of a stroke. This problem, Ilyin emphasized, is one of the factors that increase the tendency to stroke.

“The well-known risk factors for stroke are high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases , diabetes mellitus type 2, smoking, impaired cholesterol metabolism. Sleep apnea is a little-known but significant risk of stroke,” the neurologist clarified.
Ilyin added that in some cases of sleep apnea, a sleeping person can experience up to several hundred respiratory arrests. These serious cases especially significantly increase the chance of a stroke. Referring to studies, the doctor said that for people with severe forms of sleep apnea, the risk of getting a stroke increases three times.
