Upper pressure 140, lower – 50: cardiologist Bokeria named the reason for such a difference

blood pressure measurement
Cardiologist Olga Bokeria: when the upper blood pressure reading is very high and the lower reading is below normal, this is a reason to worry and check your heart.

When measuring blood pressure, an unusual picture may arise with an excessive difference in the parameters of the upper and lower blood pressure. Cardiologist Bokeria named cardiac pathology as a possible cause of such a difference, Doctor Peter reported.

“Pressure 140/50? Yes, such indicators also happen. Most often, this indicates a disease such as aortic valve defect, or aortic insufficiency,” the doctor informed.
According to the cardiologist, such a deviation indicates that the normal outflow of blood from one ventricle in the heart is disrupted. This disorder can be congenital or it occurs as an adverse consequence of diseases such as rheumatism, endocarditis, hypertension.

Olga Bokeria advised people with a large difference in upper and lower pressure readings to have their hearts examined.

“First, you need to do an echocardiogram – this is an ultrasound examination that helps to assess the correct functioning of the organ,” the doctor clarified.
The specialist added that further actions will depend on the results of such an examination. Taking them into account, the cardiologist will decide on the need for certain therapeutic measures.

Aortic insufficiency: what symptoms can you notice? In case of a mild form of the disease, it can last almost asymptomatically.

You should see a doctor if the following problems arise.

  • Shortness of breath during physical exertion;
  • Night cough;
  • Shortness of breath at rest;
  • Lung pain.
