Surgeon Surtaev: the hernia does not disappear on its own and, if neglected, threatens with dangerous complications

abdominal pain
Surgeon Konstantin Surtaev told what hernias are like and why they need to be eliminated by turning to specialists.

Surgeon Surtaev stated in conversation with Gazeta.Ru that the occurrence of a hernia is quite a serious problem, and one should not hope that everything will somehow “go away on its own.” When neglected, hernias can become a serious problem, causing life-threatening complications.

“A hernia will not disappear on its own; it needs to be eliminated with the help of a specialist. Otherwise, it threatens with serious complications,” said the doctor.
Surtaev recalled that there are different hernias.

Inguinal. Their occurrence is associated with increased intra-abdominal pressure, while internal organs may partially protrude outside the abdominal cavity. A swelling appears in the groin area; pressing on it causes unpleasant, painful sensations. Such hernias, if neglected, can lead to dangerous complications, including the development of peritonitis.

“The most dangerous complication is strangulation, which can lead to necrosis of the small or large intestine, appendix, bladder and peritonitis.”
Umbilical. In adults after 40 years, such hernias can occur under the influence of physical stress, hard work (in women – due to pregnancy and childbirth).

“The most dangerous complication of an umbilical hernia is strangulation with possible necrosis of organs and the development of intestinal obstruction,” the expert warned.
Hiatal hernia.Their occurrence is explained by the displacement of part of the stomach or intestines to the sternum area. People over 50 years of age are mainly susceptible to such hernias due to age-related weakening of muscle tone. Dangerous consequences of esophageal hernias left without proper treatment can be an ulcer of the esophagus and the development of “Barrett's esophagus” (a precancerous condition), bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

The MedikForum.ru portal previously wrote about why it is dangerous to restrain the urge to urinate and do not go to the toilet when they occur.
