Sleeping in total darkness improves the body's defense against type 2 diabetes

Scientists from Flinders University (Australia) have come to the conclusion that sleeping in complete darkness is beneficial for metabolic health.

The Lancet Regional Health — Europe journal published the opinion of Australian scientists that sleeping at night in dark conditions without even weak light penetrating into the bedroom improves the protection of the human body from the development of type 2 diabetes. For this reason, experts advise closing windows at night with light-blocking curtains and turning off all nightlights.

“Reducing exposure to light at night is the most accessible disease prevention,” said lead author Andrew Phillips.
Phillips noted that exposure to artificial light at night disrupts circadian rhythms, which has a negative impact on glucose metabolism and insulin secretion. People who sleep in insufficiently dark rooms at night have higher blood sugar levels later than those who sleep in complete darkness. This is confirmed by the results of the analysis of data from 85 thousand people, which were collected by scientists over nine years.

Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote that cardiologist Yuri Konev commented on the data of a study that showed that the habit of watching TV or constantly “sitting” on a smartphone reduces life expectancy.
