“Scabies mite and pathogenic bacteria”: Doctor Chirkova told who is infected by paper money

Doctor Olga Chirkova answered which people are especially at risk from contact with paper bills.

Doctor Chirkova recalled that paper bills often contain microorganisms and viral particles on their surface that are dangerous to human health. In particular, contact with them can lead to the contraction of pathogenic bacteria.

“Bacteria such as staphylococci, streptococci, and E. coli can live on the surface of banknotes, especially old ones, for a long time. They can cause various diseases, including skin infections, respiratory tract infections, and digestive system infections,” the doctor told Radio 1.
In addition, paper banknotes can be a breeding ground for fungi that provoke allergic reactions. Another threat for those who often handle such money is the risk of infection with scabies mites or viral infections. The specialist explained that although viruses are not able to live on the surface of money, they can remain on banknotes and coins after they have been used by a sick person.

Olga Chirkova added that paper money cannot be considered dangerous for absolutely everyone, but for a fairly large number of people it can indeed be contagious.

“If you have open wounds or a weakened immune system, it is better to avoid contact with money to reduce the risk of infection,” the doctor shared her advice.
