Ophthalmologist Shakhlo Makhkamova: if a person complains of spots floating before their eyes, they may have diabetes.

Doctor Makhkamova said in an interview that sometimes people learn about their diabetes from an ophthalmologist. The fact is that diabetes (both types 1 and 2) can develop an eye disease – diabetic retinopathy, in which specific vascular changes occur in the fundus.

The doctor stated that this pathology and the diabetes that causes it can be identified by certain vision complaints. In particular, according to complaints of loss of clarity of vision, a certain veil before the eyes, or spots in the field of vision.

“The patient experiences blurred vision, it becomes difficult for him to read, write, type, work with small details at close range. Floating gray or black dense spots appear that move along with the eye, a feeling of a veil or web in front of the eyes,” Shakhlo Makhkamova told Gazeta.Ru.
The ophthalmologist added that such problems may mean that the person's blood glucose level is significantly elevated, or that he is experiencing blood pressure surges due to vascular lesions and thick blood characteristic of diabetes.

The doctor warned: the development of eye disease in diabetes usually indicates that it arose a long time ago and over the past time the vessels of the body (including the vessels of the visual organs) have undergone significant adverse changes. The consequences of these changes can be ischemia of the vessels feeding the eyes, eye stroke, blindness.

“People often do not realize that they are developing diabetes, and eye damage occurs precisely because of untreated diabetes, approximately 10-15 years after the onset of the disease,” the ophthalmologist shared.
