One slice of white bread may contain more salt than french fries

Studies show that one slice of white bread may contain more salt than a serving of fast food french fries.

Three-quarters have been found to contain the same amount of salt per slice as a 0.34g package of pre-made salty chips.

Two slices of soft white bread provide 1.2g – one-fifth of the recommended daily allowance for an adult and as much as a hamburger.

Five foods had more than 0.9g of salt per serving – usually two a slice of loaf – more than two small servings of McDonald's french fries. According to doctors, reducing the content in bread can reduce the level of high blood pressure and, as a result, heart attacks and strokes.

“Too much salt increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Reducing sodium intake can also prevent many deaths. Eating salty foods can lead to loss of calcium, some of which can be extracted from the bone, lead to kidney disease, kidney stones, osteoporosis, stomach cancer,” says dietitian Vasilisa Ponomareva especially for MedikForum.

The ideal menu for a healthy heart

WHO recommends that adults consume no more than 6 g a day – about a teaspoon.

“The least salty product is often natural rye-wheat bread.”
