Oncologist Vorobyov: skin rash and blisters indicate pancreatic cancer

Patients diagnosed with the disease at earlier stages have a significantly higher chance of survival.

Like many forms of aggressive cancer, pancreatic tumors rarely show warning signs in their early stages, making them difficult to treat.

“Early diagnosis is paramount as it improves access to life-saving treatment. Common symptoms of the disease include pain, weight loss and fever. Occasionally, however, a rapidly spreading rash also occurs,” says oncologist Andrei Vorobyov specially for MedikForum.
Pancreatic cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the pancreas, which is the organ responsible for producing digestive fluid.

At the beginning of this process, noticeable changes in the body are unlikely to occur.

However, later on, typical warning signs may include:

  • Pain in the upper abdomen
  • Pain in the abdomen radiating to the back
  • Tenderness when touching the abdomen
  • Fever
  • Raised pulse
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

The symptoms listed above occur in most cases of advanced pancreatic cancer, but the signs may vary depending on which part of the pancreas is affected.

For example, swelling can sometimes interfere with glucagon production, which can lead to glucagonoma.

“This is characterized by a rash that usually starts as small circles of redness that develop into itchy and painful blisters. This rash, called necrolytic erythema migrans (NME), is considered one of the characteristic signs of the disease.”
