Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones produced by the zona fasciculata (the outer part of the adrenal glands). When these levels rise due to stress such as cortisol, it causes a preferential accumulation of abdominal fat, resulting in visceral fat.

“High cortisol levels can also lead to overeating, which can lead to a calorie surplus (eating more calories than you burn), however, even if you don’t overeat your maintenance calories, you can still increase visceral fat due to stress. Make sure you communicate, take time for yourself.”
