Ponomareva, a nutritionist: poor sleep prevents you from losing weight

The study showed that those who slept less had more appetite-increasing hormone in their bodies.

The quality and quantity of sleep we get every night plays a huge role in our overall health and well-being.

Lack of sleep not only makes it more difficult to perform daily activities than usual, but over time can lead to a breakdown, which leaves you vulnerable to health problems.

It can also affect your weight, an expert warned.

“Sleep is essential to allow your body to physically relax and recover from the day's activities, and to give your heart and circulatory system a chance to unwind. If you wake up sleepy and tired, you will be less likely to go to the gym, and the day ahead will seem like an uphill battle. Poor sleep has been linked to weight gain. It has been suggested that the number of hours of sleep you get each night can affect body weight and metabolism,” dietitian Oleg Varfolomeev tells MedicForum.
A study of adults aged 30 to 60 showed that participants with short sleep had lower levels of leptin (an appetite hormone that signals satiety) and increased levels of ghrelin (an appetite hormone that signals hunger).

The observed changes in hormone levels likely increase appetite, which may explain the weight gain observed in the participants.

Five hours per night were considered poor sleep, while eight hours were considered healthy. In people sleeping less than eight hours (74.4 percent of the sample), an increased body mass index (BMI) was proportional to a decrease in sleep.
