Neurologist Alekhine: meditation protects older people from Alzheimer's disease

Meditation may be more beneficial for the brain than learning a new language.

>”In the study, meditation outperformed learning a non-native language,” says neurologist Alexandra Alyokhina, exclusively for MedicForum.

His conclusion was based on his study, during which 137 participants were divided into three groups. One group, consisting of, had to study weekly two hours of English lessons.

Another group practiced at least 20 minutes of daily meditation in the comfort of their own home. The third group continued to live their normal lives without interference.

At the end of the 18-month study, a single meditation group showed better results in attention regulation and social-emotional abilities.

“In the context of meditation practices, this ability allows heightened awareness and observation of the content of experience without being absorbed by it. Social-emotional abilities decreased significantly after learning a non-native language, suggesting that the observed difference may be related to the maintenance of skills through meditation,” explains Alekhina.

Could meditation, a mental training method aimed at regulating attention and emotion, preserve brain structure and function in older people without cognitive impairment?

“Future analyzes of secondary outcomes will identify interventions most sensitive to learning meditation, and factors associated with response to intervention.”
Mental training to regulate stress and attention can improve both the cognitive and emotional aspects of aging.
