“Men over 40 and obese people”: Doctor Smirnova answered who is prone to thrombosis

Phlebologist Elena Smirnova named men over 40 among those at risk of developing blood clots.

Doctor Smirnova said that thrombosis most often develops for three reasons – excessively thick blood, which becomes prone to clotting, as well as damage to the vein walls and insufficiently active blood circulation (slow blood flow). The specialist noted that some people become more susceptible to these disorders.

As to who exactly is prone to thrombosis, doctor Smirnova answered in a conversation with RIA Novosti:

  • Men over 40;
  • Pregnant women or women who have recently given birth;
  • Patients with cancer;
  • Obese people;
  • Women taking hormonal contraceptives.

The specialist drew attention to the fact that in some cases, thrombosis detected in a person is an indication of an existing malignant tumor.

Smirnova also commented on the likelihood of blood clots appearing under the influence of a hereditary factor. The doctor reported that heredity can influence the development of varicose veins, one of the consequences of which is thrombosis of the superficial veins.

“Heredity plays an important role in the development of varicose veins. Women are more susceptible to it – about 30%, but varicose veins can also develop in men, in about 10-15%,” the doctor clarified.
Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote that blood clots usually occur in the veins of the legs, located both superficially and deeply – here are the symptoms that may indicate this.
