Lack of magnesium or iron: nutritionist Semiryadov named substances whose deficiency causes cravings for sweets

craving for sweets
Nutritionist Dmitry Semiryadov reported that a lack of certain substances, including iron and magnesium, can cause a strong craving for sweets.

Often, an increasing desire to eat something sweet is associated with a lack of energy needed by the body for full performance. The easiest way to feel a surge of energy is to consume simple carbohydrates, primarily sugar: a strong craving for sweets awakens in a tired, exhausted body. But why does a decline in strength and tone occur? One of the reasons for this is a lack of substances that provide the body with its normal functioning, supporting the processes occurring in it.

Pointing to this problem, nutritionist Semiryadov named the substances whose deficiency causes cravings for sweets.

“A deficiency of certain minerals, such as zinc, chromium, calcium and magnesium, can lead to cravings for sweets. There are many mechanisms for this phenomenon, including this may be associated with carbohydrate metabolism. A lack of magnesium, chromium and zinc can negatively affect glucose metabolism,” KP quotes the expert as saying.
In addition, Semiryadov added, the desire to eat sweet foods may be a signal of existing anemia, low hemoglobin levels, or latent iron deficiency. Other factors that provoke such cravings are low levels of vitamin D, as well as a lack of tryptophan, an amino acid that affects the synthesis of the “happiness hormone” serotonin.
