“It may indicate a number of pathologies”: Doctor Akimov called darkening in the eyes a sign of dementia

dizziness
The effect of darkening in the eyes when rising may be associated with a predisposition to dementia, and can also occur with other diseases, said doctor Vitaly Akimov.

Neurologist Akimov stated in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru:

“If a person gets dark in his eyes when he abruptly rises from bed or from a chair, then this may indicate a number of pathologies.”
What health problems can manifest themselves in this way:

  • Heart disease (heart ischemia or heart failure).
  • Dehydration;
  • Endocrine disorders (thyroid disease, adrenal insufficiency, hypoglycemia).

Also, Akimov added, darkening in the eyes can indicate diseases of the nervous system. In particular, this can be a signal of dementia, Parkinson's disease.

At the same time, the doctor should pay attention to the fact that most often the eyes darken when rising due to a decrease in blood pressure that occurs at such a moment.

“This phenomenon is called orthostatic hypotension. In addition to blurred vision and dizziness, weakness, pre-fainting or fainting conditions, and confusion may occur. If conditions with dizziness and darkening in the eyes become more frequent or are accompanied by fainting, you should consult a doctor,” the neurologist advised.
Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote about the symptoms that occur with a silent stroke.
