It Hits the Heart and Can Cause a Rupture of the Stomach: Doctors Warn of the Risks of Taking Soda

Doctors have explained the dangers of using soda as an antacid.

Many people perceive baking soda as a home remedy for heartburn, but doctors warn that this “antacid” can cause serious harm. “KP”, citing data from the journal of the American College of Medical Toxicology, reported that the consequences of using soda in this capacity can cause a violation of the acid-base balance in the blood, leading to arrhythmia, heart attack and even death.

The statement that taking soda hits the heart was commented on by specialists from the remote medical education service Vrachu.ru. They confirmed that self-medication with this “folk remedy” can provoke alkalosis – a dangerous shift in the pH of the blood to the alkaline side.

“Uncontrolled use of alkaline solutions (soda with water) can easily disrupt the pH balance of the blood, which leads to dangerous, life-threatening conditions. First of all, the heart suffers.”
Another consequence of quenching heartburn with soda can be a rupture of the stomach. According to experts, the reaction of soda with hydrochloric acid contained in the stomach stimulates the active release of carbon dioxide. This can cause a sharp increase in pressure on the walls of the stomach and, as a result, their rupture. Such damage is associated with a high risk of mortality, doctors warn. They emphasize that soda should never be consumed when the stomach is full of food or drinks – the likelihood of it rupturing in such circumstances increases significantly.

“The passion for soda has the greatest impact on the health of people who abuse alcohol, as well as pregnant women and patients taking diuretics,” the doctors warned.
