In an interview with an immunologist, Vladislav Zhemchugov, an explanation was given about how infection with meningitis can occur, which can be both viral and bacterial.
“Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges”, – in the specialist clarified, talking with radio Sputnik.
According to Zhechugov, one of the types of this infection – viral or serous – is spread by the fecal-oral route. The habitat of the virus that transmits it is closed stagnant water bodies. With regard to bacterial meningitis, it can be a particularly serious disease for a person. Its pathogen enters the body by airborne droplets. The immunologist noted that the infecting microbe penetrates the nasopharynx and often does not cause any symptoms, but during coughing or sneezing, its carrier infects people around. Sometimes meningitis can occur in the form of a runny nose and sore throat.

“Rarely, the disease occurs in the form of a runny nose and sore throat – like a cold,” added Vladislav Zhemchugov.
In some cases, the microorganism that infects meningitis manages to penetrate the brain, lead to very severe inflammation, when consciousness is lost, convulsions, spasms occur. The consequence of such a severe disease can be disability or even death.
