Fatty liver: hepatologist named signs on legs and arms that worsen in the evening

Cases of fatty liver disease are on the rise due to the ongoing obesity crisis, and the biggest problem associated with this disease remains early detection. One symptom of the condition may increase in the evening and at night.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a general term for a number of conditions caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver.

“The condition is reversible with some lifestyle measures, but it is important to address the problem at an early stage.Itching that worsens in the evening or at night, especially on the soles and palms, may indicate the accumulation of fat in liver”, – says hepatologist Alla Yuzhnova especially for MedikForum.
The classic symptoms of NAFLD are abdominal pain and a feeling of fullness in the upper right corner of the abdomen. Sometimes the condition also causes itching.

Itching associated with NAFLD is usually worse in the late evening and at night. Some people itch in one area of the body, such as the extremities or the soles of the feet and hands.

“Itching rarely occurs in alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, but it is more common in other types of liver disease.”

Scientists have yet to determine the cause of itching in NAFLD, but some mechanisms may explain the link. It is suspected that one of the possible causes is the accumulation of bile salts under the skin.

“Obesity or overweight is a major risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” adds a hepatologist.
