People suffering from diabetes need to pay special attention to their diet. Are fasting days useful for this pathology?

Endocrinologist Olga Pavlova told which foods are most dangerous for diabetics when used as fasting food.

“In order to talk about fasting days for diabetes, we it is important to consider the following parameters: blood sugar stability, comorbidities, and the state of the liver and kidneys,” the expert says.
A popular technique used by many is unloading on water. It is categorically contraindicated for diabetics – the risk of sugar drop is high.

People without hypoglycemia are allowed fasting days on low-carbohydrate vegetables. These include cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, greens.

But fruit days are strictly prohibited, and in any form of diabetes. Fruits rich in fructose 100% will give spikes in sugar. And this is fraught with such negative concomitant consequences as excess weight, insulin resistance.

All of the above also applies to fruit smoothies.

Cottage cheese – many people like to sit on it for a day or two. Alas, with acquired diabetes and insulin resistance, such fasting days will not be beneficial. The high insulin index of the product is to blame.

Kefir is also not the best option, since it will also increase blood sugar levels and contribute to the development of insulin resistance.

The most useful food option on fasting days is lean protein with vegetables, as well as protein in combination with gluten-free cereals (buckwheat, brown rice). Olga Pavlova Olga Pavlova Health Endocrinologist
