Heart disease is one of the main causes of premature death, and today diabetes mellitus is included among them, said Academician Belenkov.

Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Belenkov noted that heart disease continues to be the “killer” of a huge number of people. In an interview with MK, he noted that these diseases are “getting younger”: today, people under 50 are increasingly coming to see cardiologists.

“Women are more likely to suffer from arterial hypertension, men – from ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction,” Belenkov shared.
The scientist specified that “women's” heart diseases are more often associated with chronic inflammation, dysfunction of the vascular endothelium. “Men's” – with the development of atherosclerosis, narrowing of blood vessels.

Academician Belenkov also spoke about the three main cardiovascular diseases in Russia, adding that diabetes is one of them.

“The first two places in our country are firmly occupied by arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease,” the professor clarified.
Belenkov explained that the specialists compiling this list of leading cardiovascular diseases in Russia were convinced that atrial fibrillation or atrial fibrillation would take third place. But in the end, type 2 diabetes mellitus ended up in this place. According to the expert, this type of diabetes, which occurs as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle rather than genetics, is increasingly moving from the field of endocrinology to the field of cardiology. Some researchers suggest considering type 2 diabetes as an equivalent of coronary heart disease. Academician Belenkov drew attention to the fact that excess body weight very often becomes a factor in the development of these ailments.

Earlier, the MedikForum.ru portal wrote about the main danger of atrial fibrillation – doctor Alexander Myasnikov spoke about this in detail.
