Okhlopkov, head of the Karelian Ministry of Health, said: prion diseases are characterized by a gradually progressive lesion brain. People suffering from such diseases begin to develop psychopathic, neurological abnormalities, behavior and motor activity change, mental abilities deteriorate, dementia, encephalopathy occurs.

“Patients lose self-criticism, self-service skills, suffer from memory impairment, cognitive functions, become irritable, demanding of others,” Mikhail Okhlopkov noted. According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed.

“The SARS-CoV-2 virus activates unexpected pathogenic processes in the body, including improper folding of proteins,” – stated the minister.
Okhlopkov explained that prions are pathogens. Unlike the well-known ones (viruses, bacteria, fungi), they have a nature that is still largely a mystery to medicine. In particular, prions are mutated proteins. It is impossible to cure or destroy them today. The diseases caused by them have a long incubation period and are often diagnosed only after 30 or 40 years.
